Marubeni Europower has filed a planning application for the HyBont project, which involves constructing a green hydrogen production and refueling facility at Brynmenyn Industrial Estate in Bridgend. The project aligns with Bridgend County Borough Council’s net-zero strategy, providing locally-produced low carbon fuel for buses and refuse collection vehicles.

The green hydrogen will be generated using renewable energy, with plans for a solar farm at Bryncethin to supply a portion of the required power. The HyBont project has been shortlisted for the UK Government’s Net Zero Hydrogen Fund, which supports the development of green hydrogen projects in the country. The initiative could bring economic benefits to the region, including job creation and sustainable growth. The local community was consulted and their feedback was incorporated into the proposal.

Green hydrogen is a key solution for decarbonizing the energy system and achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050, as set by the UK government. It is produced through electrolysis, using renewable energy sources such as wind or solar to separate water molecules into hydrogen and oxygen. Green hydrogen can be used for heating and transportation, among other applications, helping to reduce the carbon footprint of industries and transport sectors that currently depend on fossil fuels. Additionally, the technology can provide a reliable and flexible energy source for balancing the grid.

The HyBont project will play a vital role in the UK’s transition to a net-zero economy by offering a locally-produced, low-carbon fuel source. However, the project also faces challenges, such as high initial production costs and the need for extensive infrastructure to store and transport hydrogen. Despite these challenges, the benefits of green hydrogen are significant, and the HyBont project represents a step toward a more sustainable future that aligns with the UK government’s net-zero strategy.
